Theme: Christmas

Providing an additional platform to showcase your handcrafted work.

Every month, we share a theme. Makers from all over the country are invited to create new work or share photos of existing work that relates to the chosen theme of the month. The theme for October 2022 was 'Christmas' to get us into the festive spirit!

The maker of each submission was also in with a chance of winning a £25.00 Turners Retreat voucher! A member of our team selected one piece as our winner. The work made by that maker will be our ‘Featured Piece of the Month’ and will be shared with our Mailing List subscribers by email and on our social media pages.

View the submissions sent in to us during October below and support fellow makers by following their social media pages. Let's help eachother grow!

Due to us working with a smaller team at the moment, we decided that this month, our team member, Stuart, would choose the winner! Stuart was presented with images and stories of each piece, no names as some entrants have entered and won in previous months and we wanted to keep everything as fair as possible.

Words from Stuart: "Reindeers are just the best! This piece is so unique, the image instantly stood out for me as I can imagine this in my own home. The paint textures add a fun element, it's such a great piece!"

We're pleased to announce that David Gibbs' wooden reindeer has been chosen as our Featured Piece of the Month - congratulations!  A £25 Turners Retreat voucher is on its way to you by email, and your work will be featured on our social media feeds and in our e-newsletters during November.

David Gibbs

Featured Piece of the Month: David Gibbs

Maker: David Gibbs
Craft: Woodworking

What inspired this piece: This piece was made by me in September 2022. The antlers of the reindeer measure 85mm across with a head made from lime wood. It is intended as a fridge magnet with a rare earth magnet attached to the back. The antlers have a textured look created by splashing paint with a paint brush. The ears are carved with a fine V tool. The holes for the eyes and nose, were drilled using a Proxxon drill.

What inspired this piece: Each Christmas I turn something different to insert into the Christmas lunch crackers for our family of 13; this time it was Christmas trees, all different to keep it interesting ! The size is dictated by the diameter of the Christmas Crackers, about 20mm. They are turned from random offcuts of different types of wood using a Robert Sorby 3/8" fingernail spindle gouge finished with Danish Oil.

What inspired this piece: It is something I have been thinking to do for a long time, just never got the courage to do it. As I have been pen turning I thought I give Christmas tree decorations a go this year, also after a prompt from Turners Retreat.

What inspired this piece: I managed to combine 2 of my hobbies on this 8" x 1" platter. I used my carbides for texturing and applied Yorkshire Grit and Chestnut Rainbow wax finish on the bottom of the platter. I then used my laser engraver for the Acorn detail. I'm really pleased with the results.

What inspired this piece: I like Christmas and turning and it’s great combining the two, I made this carousel a short while back. I like it and it’s a centre piece decoration at Christmas, combining movement and colour with a Christmas theme and good fun to spin and made the snowmen dizzy.
