Theme: Education

Providing an additional platform to showcase your handcrafted work.

Every month, we share a theme. Makers from all over the country are invited to create new work or share photos of existing work that relates to the chosen theme of the month. The theme for August 2022 was 'Education.'

The maker of each submission is also entered into a free prize draw and a winner is selected at random to win a £25.00 Turners Retreat voucher! That work will be our ‘Featured Piece of the Month’ and will be shared with our Mailing List subscribers by email and on our social media pages.

View the submissions sent in to us during August below and support fellow makers by following their social media pages. Let's help eachother grow!

If you would like to take part in the next theme, click here to find out how to enter!

Prize Draw Result

We were feeling generous with these three submissions this month, so we're pleased to announce that Phil Scarlett, Chris Doy and Kate Kitchin have all won a voucher each - congratulations!  A £25 Turners Retreat voucher is on its way to you by email, and your work will be featured on our social media feeds and in our e-newsletters during September.

Phil Scarlett Arts

Phil Scarlett Arts

Maker: Phil Scarlett
Craft: Woodturning/Carving

What inspired this piece: The inspiration came from a piece of art I saw in France which contained lots of little books, no mice or clocks these are my own added features as I like every piece to have a bit of a fun story whilst also being a useful usable piece of art.

Tools used are my hand carving tools including my Flexcut Cutting Knife and detail knives. Rotary carver, lathe and a Peter Child pyrography machine. I use Hampshire Sheen Intrinsic Colours for the colouring, they still allow the grain to show through and when coloured they can sand back really nicely to make the spine of the book look aged.

Maker: Chris Doy
Craft: Woodcarving

What inspired this piece: I was inspired to produce this piece as a tribute to my wife who has taken up knitting and, after taking some lessons and you-tubing some techniques, has produced some beautiful pieces, much to her own surprise and delight. That has inspired her to also learn crochet. The piece, which is called Nora the Knitting Gnome, is carved by hand from Tulip Wood (which was a first for me). The finish is achieved using Abranet sanding sheets, from 80 grade to 320 grade, and Liberon teak oil and a clear wax polish.

Chris does not currently have any social media links.
