Sticks & Stumps

Maker: Helen Williams
Craft: Woodturning

What inspired this piece: This piece was inspired by two things. Firstly, a need to make something to show off the rare character of this naturally curled oak. Secondly, a conversation with my sister-in-law which alerted me to the notion that "hearts are in!” So the idea of slicing and setting the wood in to heart shaped was born. Chief among the tools and materials used were GlassCast 10/50 resin from Turners Retreat, and our fantastic collection of Robert Sorby wood turning chisels, shaped and honed by the equally indispensable ProEdge sharpening system, also from Turners Retreat.

Maker: Cherry Ferris
Craft: Pyrography

What inspired this piece: I wanted to submit a piece called ‘Times Gone By.' I love the nostalgia and romance of old photos from a bygone and more gentle era. This piece was developed from a drawing in my sketchbook of a london socialite from Victorian times.

David Gibbs
David Gibbs

Maker: David Gibbs
Craft: Woodworking

What inspired this piece: Like any other woodworker, I have a collection of off cuts of various species of wood that I’ve had stashed away over the years.

In order to use them I made a heart shaped box from birch plywood which was cut into segments using a scroll saw. I filled the box with ‘chocolates’ made from individual species of wood (off cuts from turning spindles from Turners Retreat). Each chocolate is hand finished with Chestnut Sanding Sealer and wax. Made with love.

Kate's Kuality Krafts

Maker: Kate Kitchin
Craft: Woodworking

What inspired this piece: Nothing says romance like a walk in the forest with a loved one (or collecting logs.. to turn!). I have cut this Oak tree from Oak wood using my scroll saw and rotary tool to smooth each piece to create texture and definition. Finished with 100% natural oil (from Turners Retreat) and colours. Complete with cute little heart to represent my love of trees. This is 1 of 3 tree design that I now make and sell… a new thing!

Chris Doy
Chris Doy

Maker: Chris Doy
Craft: Woodcarving

What inspired this piece: This is a wedding present to friends. They had liked a zebrano bowl that I had carved so I carved the heart in Zebrano and mounted it on an Oak base. Their initials C and G (Charlotte and Gary) are inset carved on the front of the heart, with one having a textured finish to help distinguish them. The whole piece was finished with abranet (80- 400) to feel smooth to touch and teak oil and Black Bison wax polish. The date of the wedding is carved on the back of the base, so Gary has no excuse for missing any anniversary. Their wedding had been postponed three times during the covid lockdown regime.
