Turn & Burn Demonstration Day

Join us on Saturday 11th June for our second ‘Turn & Burn’ demonstration day at Turners Retreat!

As we had so much fun at our Turn & Burn day in March, we're doing it again next month!

On Saturday 11th June, we’re hosting a ‘Turn & Burn’ demonstration day at Turners Retreat!

We’ll be joined by some very special guests that will be ready to show off their skills, share hints and tips and answer any questions you may have. All demonstrations will run at the same time. You are welcome to spend as much or as little time with each demonstrator and browse our store at your own pace.

Please note, this will not be a seated or recorded event.

And what’s a good show without a good show offer? We’ll have exclusive offers and discounts across our entire product range, in-store only!

This event is completely free to attend, with free parking. No tickets needed, just turn up when you’re ready! Demonstrations will start at 10am but the store will be open from 9:30am for early browsing if you want to be the first to grab those offers!

We really hope you can join us; it would be great to see you!

Demonstrators

Mick Hanbury

Our good friend and Course tutor, Mick, has been turning professionally for over 25 years. During these years, Mick has developed a unique style of decorative finishes to his pieces and is well known for his beautiful finial boxes, elegant spiral stem goblets, and delicately patterned platters. His work is a beautiful sight to behold!

Mick will be demonstrating colour and embellishing techniques on turned pieces. If you haven't seen Mick demonstrate before, you will thoroughly enjoy watching his making process - it's mesmerising to watch. If you have seen Mick before, then you already know that you're in for a treat!

Rick Dobney

Born a Yorkshireman but now living south of the border close to the Derbyshire Peak District, Rick has become a well-known face in the field of wood turning. Rick first picked up turning tools in 2008 as a form of relaxation and ‘therapy’ from the busy day job where he works in IT. Joining Sheffield Woodturning Club was a great introduction into the woodturning community, it provided an opportunity to meet and learn from many of the best demonstrators on the circuit, and Rick remains active in the club to this day.

Rick’s first public demonstration was in 2015 to his home club at Sheffield, since then he has demonstrated to clubs and events across the UK bringing his own style of turning to inspire and encourage others to try to think outside of the ‘round and brown’.

While enjoying tackling large characterful pieces of wood, Rick is probably best known for the multi-axis pieces turned using a jig he has personally developed. He also looks to incorporate materials not usually associated with woodturning into his work broadening the application of the lathe. We're thrilled that Rick will be showcasing these ideas at our event!

Kate Kitchin

Kate has been woodturning for almost 7 years since leaving school, and her hobby quickly developed into a passion! Since appearing on BBC2’s show, ‘Jay’s Yorkshire Workshop’, Kate has overcome woodworking machinery fears, expanded her knowledge and now continues to grow in confidence.

Kate’s inspiration comes from the natural beauty of wood, what can be done with it and the sense of achievement that comes from being a maker - a little imagination goes a long way! We hope that you will help us make Kate feel extremely welcome at her second demonstration at Turners Retreat!

Tony Kwasniak

Tony was a hobby woodturner before joining Robert Sorby in the 1980’s and was their demonstrator for a number of years, promoting and selling their tools in 17 different countries throughout the world.

Tony is hoping to pass on valuable hints and tips based on a combination of experience and not always getting it right first time! Hopefully, something for all pen turners from absolute beginners to seasoned pen-sters!

Lisa Shackleton

Lisa started her pyrography journey over 20 years ago when someone gifted her a Peter Child machine. Now an established artist, Lisa teaches and demonstrates this wonderful craft to encourage and support others on their woodburning journey.

Expect to learn what can be achieved with each pyrography point, find out more about shading and the variety of textures that can be done, and different ways to add colour to your work.

Paul Richmond

Paul, from Robert Sorby, one of the world's finest woodworking tool manufacturers, will be joining us to demonstrate the fantastic, ProEdge Sharpening System.

The Robert Sorby ProEdge offers effortlessly repeatable sharpening every time. Hugely versatile, this industrial strength machine is built to last and delivers astounding ‘factory finish’ results without fail. Perhaps the most simple to use sharpener on the market, this system replicates the industry standard of achieving a flat grind using the preferred method of belts over traditional grinding wheels.

Paul will be happy to show you how to sharpen your tools correctly to achieve the perfect sharp edge.
