At Turners Retreat we have one of the most comprehensive ranges of pen making equipment available.
All our pen kits can be supplied with detailed assembly instructions. We also pride ourselves in being able to supply spare parts for every pen kit we sell, so in the unlikely event of any problem, we'll be pleased to help you out. Many kits are available with more than one plating option.

Our standard quality 24K Gold offers a pen that is available at a very competitive price, and is ideal for inexpensive gifts and for general use.

The Premium Gold plating is standard on most 'Euro' and 'Round Top' series and has plated parts that undergo additional cleaning and degreasing processes before being plated on 'plating trees' as opposed to the tumble plating process used on many less expensive kits.

Our Titanium range represents the finest quality kit money can buy. The parts are racked, cleaned and degreased, then plated with a layer of ultra hard wearing Titanium, colour coded to match the exterior gold. The exterior gold is then plated on top of the titanium, resulting in far greater wear resistance and durability.

Chrome is also available on some items. A more recent introduction for pens, it is growing in popularity and has the benefit of being hard wearing and easy to maintain.

Pens can be turned on a lathe by a number of different methods, but most people use a dedicated mandrel and bush system. Our mandrels and bushing sets are supplied by the manufacturer of the pen kits to ensure full compatibility. The 'A' mandrel is used for most of the slim line pens with the option of a more substantial 'B' mandrel for use with the larger pens. This mandrel is held in place in the headstock of the lathe with a 'drill driver'. This is based around a morse taper and hence is available in MT1 and MT2 fittings. The drill driver remains in the headstock of the lathe and the bushings and wood blank can be fitted onto the mandrel shaft and then located back into the drill driver to be turned. The bushing set provides a quick and accurate method of sizing the finished diameters of the item prior to assembly. As the kits vary in finished sizes, so each type of kit has its own dedicated bushing set. If in any doubt, just give us a call.

Round Top Collection

'Euro' style pens have a softly rounded profile to both the main body and top cap of the pen. Some units (e.g. Twist pen) form a one piece unit, while others make up a two piece unit with a removable cap. Flat Top Collection

These units normally have a body and cap that is straight or parallel sided (as opposed to the softly rounded 'Euro' style.) and have a flat (rather than rounded) end cap. Where units separate into two pieces these tend to be 'click' fit push/pull fittings as opposed to screw fitting.
