African Blackwood
African Blackwood is very strong and tough in all catergories, but is not normally used for steam bending due to its weight and density. African Blackwood has a severe blunting effect in tools, Tungsten-carbide-tipped tools are required for conversion. It is difficult to work but turns well. Pre-boring is neccessary for nailing and screwing, and screw threads can be tapped into it almost as well as in metal. It glues fairly well, takes stain well and can be brought to a brillaint, lustrous finish. |

Bocote Bocote is a hard, dense and fairly oily tropical wood that is highly prized for its dramatic, wild striping. These dark brown or black streaks, which sometimes form in concentric circles, give Bocote its defining look and lend finished products a truly distinctive appearance. The heartwood of Bocote ranges in colour from brown to golden brown, with of course, those telltale dark streaks weaving throughout, and its sapwood is yellowish. Its grain varies widely from straight to interlocked. |

Bubinga There can be problems with gum exudation, and steam-bending qualities are poor. It works well with both hand and machine tools, though irregular grain may pick up during planing or moulding, so a low cutting angle should be used. It has a moderate to severe blunting effect because it contains silica. Gum pockets may make gluing difficult. It takes stain easily, an can be sanded and polished to an excellent finish. |

Cocobolo has a moderate blunting effect on cutting tools. The natural oils in the wood make it difficult to glue, but it can be nailed and screwed satisfactory. Worked surfaces from planing, turning, moulding and mortising come out very smooth and clean. It takes stain and can be brought to an excellent finish. |

Elm This wood has a high resistance to shock loads and very low stiffness. Provided cutting edges are kept sharp, the wood works well with hand and machine tools. It has good gluing properties. When planing, sharp and thin cutting edges are required to avoid a woolly finish. It takes stain well and can be polishes to a high finish. |

Kingwood SPECIAL OFFER : 1/3 OFF ALL KINGWOOD LIMITED AVAILABILITY

Becuase of its density and waxy properties, it can be brought to a high degree of finish. It holds nails and screws well, but does need pre-boring. Gluing requires some care. Kingwood works well with both hand and machine tools, but does have a moderate dulling effect on cutters. |

Purple Heart Purple Heart is hard, dense and heavy with high crushing, stiffness and bending strengths, a moderate steam-bending rating and medium resistance to shock loads. It is difficult to work by hand, and machining is moderately difficult. The blunting effect on cutters is moderate to severe. Slow feed rates and reduced cutting angle are advised. Blunt cuters will heat the wood and cause resin to exude. It glues, waxes, stains and polishes well, turns very well, but is not easy to sand. Spirit finishes tend to remove the purple colour; lacquer retains it. |

Spanish Olive Olive is hard, strong and heavy. The wood has good wearing properties and resistance to abrasion. Because of its interlocked grain and twisty nature it does not respond particularly well to hand tools, and has a moderate blunting effect on cutters. Olive does, however, turn well. Because of its waxy lustre it polishes to an excellent finish. |

Thuya Burr Since this is a burr with contorted and interlocked grain, very sharp tools are required. It can be turned, planed and sliced, but this requires a lot of skill. It glues well if the joints are first wiped with solvent to reduce the oil content. The wood can be brought to a very high finish if sanded down to 1200 grit. |

Wenge Wenge is a heavy and dense wood which is highly resistant to abrasion. It has a high resistance to shock loads and high bending strength, low stiffness, medium crushing strength and a low steam-bending rating. The wood works well with both machine and hand tools, and has a moderate to medium blunting effect on cutting-edges. Gluing and polishing can be difficult because of the resin cells in the wood. It is good wood for turning and sands well. |

Yew Yew is a hard, elastic wood, with a medium crushing and bending strength, low resistance to shock loads, low stiffness and straight-grained. It is fairly difficult to work by hand. Straight-grained wood planes well, but irregular grain is prone to tear-out, and other machining qualities depend on grain direction. Yew splits easily. Gluing can be tricky due to the oily nature of the wood. Yew turns very well indeed, stains well and can be polished to an excellent finish. |

Zebrano Zebrano is a hard, dense and heavy wood with high strength properties and very high stiffness. It is not suitable for steam bending. It works well with hand tools and in most machining operations. Planing can be tricky, since interlocked grain can tear badly, so sanding is advised for a final finish. Gluing is satisfactory if care is taken. |
