Japanese Waterstones![Japanese Waterstones]() Japanese waterstones are well known for the benefits which they offer over traditional oilstones. Not only do they cut faster but also give a far keener cutting edge. They are a little softer than traditional stones and consequently wear a little faster but are far easier to maintain. Individual coarse and medium stones may be stored in water all the time although protection should be taken against frost damage. If the stone is mounted on a stand avoid submersing the stand in water. This means that they are immediately ready for use. Fine stones should be sprinkled with water prior to use and will benefit from a regular dressing with a Nagura stone for the very finest finish.

Fine Finishing Stones Mounted on a stand, both stones measure 206 x 73 x 23mm (approx. 8" x 3" x 1")

Flattening Stones Flattening stones are designed to re-true the surface of a waterstone. Soak the stone in water prior to use and then rub the surface of the waterstone along the flattening stone. The grooves remove any waste material and prevent clogging. Rinse the waterstone well before re-using. Black stone is for coarse grits, blue for medium and coarse grits.

Aluminium Oxide Wheels We strongly recommend the use of 'White Wheels' for grinding HSS. aluminium oxide cuts faster and generates far less heat than standard wheels. The friable bond on these wheels means that once worn, the top surface powders away releasing fresh new abrasive from below. The 36 grit wheels are used for reprofilling tools. They create less heat and are less likely to glaze. Use the 80 grit wheels for sharpening. |

Veritas Lapping Plate Measuring 12" x 4.1/8" x 1.1/8" high and weighing approximately 14lb, this is one substantial lapping plate! Made from an iron chosen for its dimensional stability and material consistency, the bottom and sides are machined, and the top is ground flat to within 0.001" over the entire surface. The unique channel design, optimised for a figure-eight lapping pattern, serves to eliminate resistance from hydraulic lock and captures excess oil, abrasive and slurry. For fingertip safety, the channels have been chamfered to eliminate sharp edges and corners. Not intended for heavy material removal, it is designed to condition or smooth previously ground surfaces and is used with light oil. There is available a range of lapping powder grits, but we recommend 280 grit for twisted, wavy or linished objects, 400 grit for ground surfaces with a slightly rough texture, and 600 grit for surfaces requiring little material removal. A useful tool for improving the surface quality of plane soles, blades and chisels, it will lap materials up to the same surface area of the lapping plate, accommodating even a jack-plane sole. |
