Our Special Guest Demonstrators

Joey Richardson

Joey Richardson is an English woodturner known for her delicate pierced and richly hued wood forms.   Born in rural Lincolnshire England, she grew up in the heart of Twigmoor Woods on a small farm. Here, the magnificent trees subliminally rooted within her a deep love for the woodland and she has been turning reclaimed local timber for over thirty years.

There is often an autobiographical element in her work which has strong links to the history of the place and the origin of material. Joey will demonstrate many of her techniques including her thin-wall turning, piercing, texturing, pyrography, carving and airbrushing.

Awards of both a Worshipful Company of Turners bursary (2005) and a Queen Elizabeth QEST/Carpenters Company scholarship (2012) funded her development studies in America with the late Binh Pho; Whilst her recent MA in Fine Art (2018) has brought a theoretical depth to her work.

Joey’s sculptures are held in numerous permanent and private collections worldwide which include recent commissions for Faberge and the Royal Warrant Holders Association.  She is Master’s Steward for the Turners Company, President of the AWGB and has been awarded the prestigious QEST Award of Excellence (2015).

She continues to live and work in Lincolnshire, using carefully sourced wood and materials which nourish her practice and enrich the many exhibitions she takes part in.

Emma Cook 'The Tiny Turner'

Emma Cook began turning at the age of 16. She quickly found a passion for woodturning and wanted to make it her chosen career. However, it wouldn't be until 2013 when she founded her business 'The Tiny Turner' that she began demonstrating and commission work. A year or so later she created her online shop and started to grow her business more towards retail and concentrated on her demonstrating and teaching in favour of the commission work.

In 2000, she was fortunate enough to start her journey into wood carving by taking regular lessons from Master Carver Michael Painter. During this time she carved one of her better known pieces 'Errol the Swamp Dragon' - a character from Sir Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels. Since beginning wood carving, Emma has used these skills on various turned projects and this is where Emma's passion lies: in the combination of both crafts.

Her 'inspiration' is often drawn from fantasy art: faeries; dragons and other mythical creatures. She enjoys wood in its natural form but also enjoys colouring and has developed a technique of her own; combining specially manufactured 'chameleon' mica powders and flakes on top of acrylic size and different backgrounds of paints and natural timber.

Emma joined the Register of Professional Turners in 2021 taking on the role of Webmaster on joining the committee in 2022. As of March 2024, Emma became Chair of the RPT and continues to demonstrate at clubs and shows throughout the UK, Ireland, Europe and America.

During the 25 year anniversary of Turners Retreat you will see various projects which combine Emma's use of turning, carving and colour to create some bold, bright pieces!

Mick Hanbury

Mick Hanbury was born in Cyprus, the son of a soldier, and travelled around Europe for most of his childhood. He spent a lot of time in Germany, is fluent in German and can also teach in German.

He started his career as a cabinet maker where he made all manner of artefacts. Around 25 years ago, Mick took to woodturning and since then has grown in stature to be one of the finest artistic turners in the world.

Mick demonstrates at local and national shows in England, USA, Germany, and Ireland and at woodturning clubs throughout the UK.

Mick used to be the resident tutor at Doncaster College teaching Open College Network levels 1-3 to mature students. Mick now teaches his specialised woodturning and embellishing techniques at Turners Retreat in Nottinghamshire.

Kez Halliday

Born in Nottingham, Kez is a self taught artist that has worked with many artistic mediums, including painting, wood carving, scroll saw art and pyrography. Inspired by tattoo art, animals and film, Kez creates very fine detail and layers of shading to add texture and depth to her woodburned pieces.

The level of detail in Kez's work is to be admired! Come meet Kez and see her work for yourself, whilst learning some traditional pyrography techniques! Kez will show you ways to add dark tones and depths by shading, how to clean your points to get a cleaner burn and talk you through textures that can be achieved with the points available.
